Meet 16 Strings String Quartet Toowoomba musicians:

Deborah Fisher, violin

Deborah is a British pianist and violinist who began learning at
3 and 8 years respectively, and completed a Bachelor of Music (honours) at Cardiff University. Since migrating she has pursued environmental and plant sciences and is now a plant physiology PhD scholar. Deborah the group leader, and regularly plays at Toowoomba’s Empire Theatres for musical productions, is concertmaster of Toowoomba Concert Orchestra, violinist with the Band o’ Coots bush band, and the mother of two busy girls. She thrives on a social life full of music to offset the rigour of doing science research by day

Emily Schmidt, viola

With an AmusA violin (2009). AmusA + distinction for viola (2010). Emily has performed in orchestras (violin + viola) throughout schooling (including a school performance tour around europe with some solo viola performances in churches etc) + early uni (UQ bell orchestra + Medical Orchestra). Emily has played violin in a ‘bush band’ playing at local bush dances, fetes and birthdays. She played viola in Brisbane quartet for a number of years but since moving to Toowoomba to further her studies in medicine she’s loving being back on the violin again.

Michael Stockwell, violin

Michael was a scholarship student in Bachelor of Music with an Honours degree in viola performance and ATCL in viola. He has played in orchestra’s and ensembles both on the East Coast of Australia and in New Zealand.  His favourite genre of performance is musical theatre and modern music especially compositions by regional Australian composers.  His greatest reward and musical triumph is seeing his past students go on to be strings teachers and professional classical and folk performers throughout Australia and the world.

Hugh Hansen, cello

Hugh has played in many ensembles for quite a number of years, notably Toowoomba Concert Orchestra and Toowoomba Camerata. One of his favourite events was performing at the national KMEIA Kodaly conference in Sydney with the latter. Hugh is currently working towards his AMusA exam this year with the intention of being part of the AYO Young Symphonists. Music has always been a big part of Hugh’s life and he’s delighted to be a part of 16 Strings String Quartet.
