16 Strings String Quartet Brisbane musicians are a bunch of fun loving musicians who simply love playing music. Handpicked and very talent musicians who formed back in 2009. They play simply because they love to, as they all have other careers mid week –
Kelly Simmers, violin

Kelly started playing the violin at a young age and has performed at many weddings, functions, concerts and competitions over the years. She’s currently completing her final year Bachelor of Music at the University of Queensland, with Patricia Pollett. Kelly has been in many groups, including the Queensland Youth Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific, the University of Queensland Symphony Orchestra and the Pandora String Quartet. She’s also studied with professionals in Canada, the USA and the Netherlands. And she loves passing her musical skills onto her many violin students.

Laurelie Wall, viola

First taking up the violin at age 8, Laurelie has performed in Italy, Austria, Singapore and more recently with the Richmond Orchestra in London. Playing both violin and viola, she was fully involved in the music program at Brisbane’s Somerville House, where she received her AmusA (Violin) in 2008. Laurelie was also principal 2nd violinist in the Queensland Orchestra 2. She was also part of the Queensland Youth Orchestra whilst she was completing her Masters of Speech Pathology at the University of Queensland. She loves the rich mellow sounds her viola contributes to the String Quartet and is delighted to be part of this harmonious team.

Ann Patrick, violin

Ann graduated from The University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Major majoring in performance in 2014. She has been a member of the Queensland Youth Orchestras (QYS) and in 2012 she was Associate Concertmaster of their international tour and in 2013 she was Concertmaster. She was invited to be Concertmaster of the University of Queensland Symphony Orchestra in 2014. In the same year she was also invited to participate in two orchestral projects at the Australian National Academy of Music. In the first of these she performed Brahms Symphony No.4 and Brett Dean’s Viola Concerto with Simone Young and Brett Dean. The second performance was Shostakovich Symphony No.6 and Tchaikovsky Romeo and Juliet Overture. Ann also plays regularly with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

Tom Witten, cello

Tom has been playing cello since the age of 6 and has performed with ensembles in Australia, New Zealand and Canada. In 2007 he won the Rick Farbach Jazz Scholarship from the Noosa Federation of the Arts. He’s currently completing a Bachelor of Music (Performance) on cello, studying with Gwyn Roberts at the University of Queensland. Tom has played with various groups including the Watergate String Quartet as well as being principal cellist with the Vivace String Ensemble and the Brisbane Nazarene Concert Orchestra. He’s also played piano, guitar and electric bass with a number of popular music groups and church bands, as well as playing electric bass with the Symphonic Band and Symphony Orchestra.
